HitlerIf history has taught us anything it’s that Adolph Hitler had a ridiculous moustache, but also that the tools of the media, while undoubtedly invaluable for reporting on global events, can also be exploited and used for propaganda purposes, distorting the truth in the process. Fast forward to the 21st Century and there may be a different set of tools, but they’re still subject to the same abuse and censorship as before.

iPhone 3G SYou’ll never guess what. There was a new iPhone unveiled yesterday. No, seriously. It’s faster and everything. You might even have read about it on Twitter.

All jokes aside, it’s hard to miss a big new product from Apple, even if you’re not in the slightest bit interested with technology. That’s certainly the case on Twitter, where Apple, iPhone and WWDC (The conference it was unveiled at) were all trending topics before Apple executive Phil Schiller even took to the stage.

snakeoilI seem to have sat in a few too many meetings over the last couple of months helping people get their heads around ’social media’. More importantly, how to go about helping them get involved.

The thing that has struck me the most is that the concept of what ’social media’ actually is seems to be getting in the way and making firms who have a firm understanding of who they are and what they do, suddenly very nervous. I sit there and wait for the nervous ticks to start, knowing that any minute the phrase ’so, what’s this social media thing then?’ is about to be asked.

Social media is now about amalgamationI’m going to make a bold statement. Every main form of social media communication we’ll be using for the next half decade at least is already popular. We won’t see any new startups breaking out in the same way. That phase is over. Gmail leads by a mile in webmail. Facebook is the best way to stalk your friends and Twitter is the way to go if you want to make yourself look like a wag. What’s the way forward now? Grouping all these forms of communication together.
