What I do?
As chairman I help JBC and Mike get their eyes up from the grindstone on regular basis to see where RP is going, how that compares to what we expected, what we are going to do about it and by when.
The key is accurate and timely info, realistic regularly reviewed targets and budgets, along with detailed understanding of both by the execs involved.
Like all small businesses (and nowadays big ones too!) a relentless focus on cash is important, particularly if (like JBC and Mike) you come from a large company where cash flow was rarely discussed.
My Background
35 years in business have given me plenty of successes and failures to learn from. The first part I spent building a career in the record industry which included launching CD (not quite alone tho at times it felt like it) and spells as MD of Polygram (now Universal) and EMI in the UK. Time spent away from my wife and family (6 kids) in the office, travelling, and at gigs persuaded me to change to a portfolio career.
I have since consulted with larger companies (Polygram, Panasonic, London 2012, DSGI inter alia) on a project by project basis and invested time, money or both developing or starting up new companies.
Why I Like Working With RP
The market is new and of great interest to me and the opportunity is clearly immense. JBC, Mike and the widening team are in this because they love it – that passion is infectious.
We are engaged in making RP a business alongside which it is possible/encouraged for our people to have a real life – and I’m the unwitting proof. I have been battling an unpleasant disease for the last few months and JBC and Mike have insisted on keeping me involved throughout – it has been the best therapy.
